Once in a blue moon.
Over the course of Melbourne’s second lockdown, it has been particularly hard at times to find the silver lining. Ed Moon attempts to find this with a brand new single that shares his name ‘Moon’.
Ed has been grinding in the Melbourne music scene for most of his late adolescence. He has been able to humbly amalgamate all the things he’s learnt and package them into the ever so alluring ‘Moon’. Even Matt Corby declared Ed as, “…someone you’ll dig because of his gorgeous voice. He has very worldly, big picture lyrics”.
Ed is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ and POC community, drawing strength and inspiration from each.
Upon first listen, you may think you’ve accidentally clicked on Lauryn Hill’s ‘Ex-Factor’ due to the sparkly chimes that greet us at the beginning of the song. We are soon reminded of Ed’s soothing timbre as the first few bars lull us into a dreamy, sugary sweet embrace.
Ed’s love for the moon is professed through passionate, earnest lyrics that reflect his influence from solo artists Leon Bridges and H.E.R. His way with words proves him to be wise beyond his 19 years whilst maintaining the purity, simplicity and innocence of the song, a skill that is not always showcased in today’s current music. The mellow instrumentation, harmonious with Ed’s captivating vocals, convey his love of the greats that came before him. He could’ve been (and probably was) writing with Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra and Joni Mitchell in another lifetime.
The mark of a good songwriter is their ability to transport you to where they are. To make you see, hear and feel whatever they choose to paint. Ed truly makes us feel like we are slow dancing in the moonlight, basking in its glow.
